Maitland
Had a big drive today! 22klms to Maitland known as the "heart of the Yorke Peninsula". It is also the final resting place of Clem Hawke the father of our 23rd Prime Minister "Bob Hawke". Maitland sits on a ridge and has views to Spencer Gulf.
We overnighted here at the showgrounds as it was another scorching 38.6 degrees and air conditioning a must and to do some washing.
The Copper Coast is less than 2 hours drive from Adelaide at the top of the Yorke Peninsula with a total population of approx. 14,000 people.
Moonta
A lot of mining history in Moonta. In 1860 copper was discovered which led to the Moonta Mining Co. which became one of the largest copper mines in Australia. Lots of old buildings, museums and they have a train that can take you around the heritage areas.
Surrounding seaside towns of Port Hughes & Moonta Bay are very popular for the boating community and families with some safe swimming beaches.
Part of Moonta Mines
A short drive away is Kadina-the main shopping precinct, along with some beautiful historical limestone buildings. Wallaroo is the largest seaside town on the Copper Coast and is a shipping terminal for grain and also the ferry goes from here to Lucky Bay on the other side of Spencer Gulf. It also boasts one of the best beaches on the Yorke Peninsula, beautiful white sandy beach and crystal clear waters you can also drive on it.
Wallaroo North Beach
Port Hughes another lovely seaside town with a boat ramp, long jetty, 2 lovely beaches and a great Tavern with well priced meals and drink. Great spot to catch amazing sunsets.
Port Hughes sunset
Well time to leave the Yorke Peninsula and onto the Eyre Peninsula. Have enjoyed our 2 weeks.
